Rebecca Stebbins - Biography

Rebecca Stebbins

California Impressionist

Rebecca Stebbins is an oil painter and also teaches art to children and adults, working both outdoors en plein air and in her studio outside Santa Barbara, California.

Rebecca began painting in oils in Provence, France, in 2000, studying with Judy Ryan of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She has studied with prominent artists in Santa Barbara and at the Taos Art Establish, Traverse City Fine art Center, and at Chateau l'Age Baston in France. She continues to paint in France each twelvemonth and has been selected for artist residencies in that location, including at Atelier de la Rose and Bordeneuve Retreat. Her work is rooted in the traditions of realism and impressionism, both of which have a deep history in California and in French republic.

Built-in in Seattle and raised in the Midwest, Rebecca graduated from Brown Academy and has lived in the Santa Barbara expanse since 1985. She teaches art to k-eighth grade students at The Howard School and belongs to the California Art Club, SCAPE (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment), Santa Barbara Art Association, and Carpinteria Arts Center, where she was also the Executive Director for three years. Her works tin can be constitute in collections across the United States and in Europe. In her costless time, she tin can exist institute in her garden, buried in books, or visiting museums around the world.

"As a painter, I am drawn to introspection and discovery, to deepen my understanding of this world, to discover and share beauty, to encourage people to care about our natural and artisanal worlds and to sympathize how precious and fragile they are. I paint the landscapes I love, mostly in California and in France, where I am drawn to the rugged dazzler of the coast and the mountains and to the quality of illumination in certain places and times. I seek shapes and colors that, when pieced together, tell a story or invoke a sensation. I will always be enchanted by the trip the light fantastic of low-cal on fields of golden grass or the curl of shadow underneath a wave. As long every bit at that place is magic to exist institute in the lightness of the world, in that location will be value, for me, in painting it."
